BMW stated that the E46's body shell was 70% stiffer than the E36's. While the car's weight was reduced because of extensive usage of aluminum in places like the hood and brake calipers as well as the suspension, it was ultimately heavier than its predecessor due to an increased number of features and a plusher, leather-lined interior.
The E36 is definitely a better car to daily drive and all it needs to drift well is an M3 LSD (or welded) and some lowering springs or coilovers. The same goes for a 240sx. The stock E36 is faster than a stock 240sx. Parts are easier to find for a 240sx, and they are a lot cheaper.250,000 miles can be regarded as a good mileage for the BMW E36. It’s a very sturdy car with robust parts and solid reliability. It can last a lifetime if it never gets into a major accident and is maintained properly. So, if maintenance history is good and there had only been one or two owners of the car throughout, a BMW E36 with 250,000

Since even the youngest M3s will now be a decade and a half old, mileage is only one part of the story of any car. Is a BMW E36 a good first car? If it is a second car and you plan to drift with it, then yes. Pretty much anything rear wheel drive that doesn’t weigh too much will be a good car to start off with.
The E36 was and is a hell of a car though. First of the (semi) modern 3 series and won car of the year constantly. They spent the better part of a decade designing it and then sold it for another decade. There's so much good to say about the E36 series BMW, but I'll try to keep it to a few important points: Engine and Transmission. The 328's real triumph, they work together simply and wonderfully, like a pair of accomplished dancers, smoothly shifting the car even when seemingly incredible demands are made by its driver. .
